The Shasta-Trinity National Forest issued an unusual special use permit that allows a company to utilize two campsites (just two sites, not entire campgrounds) to provide a glamping experience. Under the permit, at the two sites the campsite operator has temporarily provided furnishings, a camp kitchen, kitchen essentials, a solar shower and camp toilet within a canvas walled tent on an elevated but removable wood platform. The permit only runs for one season, from May to October, and the permittee plans to provide the same experience next year but at a different site in the forest.
The permittee advertises the two sites for rent as “vacation rentals, camping style” and emphasizes its sustainability. The permit is apparently based on the Forest Service’s outfitter and guide permits. The permittee pays a fee of $230 for each of the two sites, reservation fees plus 3% of their revenue. In addition, the permittee collects a transient occupancy tax as well as local tourism improvement taxes.
