The National Park Service recently decided to take over two marina operations in the Curecanti National Recreation Area that have been successfully operated by a concessioner since the 1970s. The existing concessioner has objected to the takeover. The marinas provide employment for people in the local community. However, notwithstanding staffing reductions at the agency, NPS is proposing to use its own employees to operate and maintain the marina. NPS has not provided any information as to the true costs of having federal employees operate the marina and having the agency itself pay for all costs of maintaining the facility. NPS has also admitted that the agency has been unable to maintain the improvements already under its control and has incurred a $23 billion maintenance backlog.
